5:35. Seeking WASILAH! Ah! Know the MISGUIDED group those who made ‘BAIYAH’/’SOHOBAT’ to Ulema as a CONDITION to get close to Allah!
O you who have believed, fear Allah and seek the means [of nearness] to Him and do Jihad in His cause that you may succeed.
What type of Ayah is that?
2. Reward/ Consequence.
What are those instructions?
(1) Fear Allah
(2) Seek or work towards Allah THROUGH WASILAH
(3) Do Jihad in the path of Allah
And also there is a consequence or reward for obeying these instructions, which is SUCCESS.
Obeying those three instructions will make a believer succeed.
What’s the subject?
A prescription, as to how to be successful.
What are those things? Those Issues/Subjects?
Those 3 instructions are the subjects.
(1) How do you Fear Allah?
By obeying His command. Easy to understand.
(3) How do you do Jihad?
Have to look for it what is meant by Jihad (!)
(2) What’s the WASILAH to get to Allah?
So, what do we do now to understand this instruction?
Check the Ayah before it and after it if you can find any relevant info. And we found that this Ayah has no relevance with the Ayah before or after it.
Now, what do you do?
I check the Tafseer.
Which Tafseer you check?
The first one is Tafseer Abdullah Ibne Abbas.
Why is that?
Because Rasulullah Salla Allahu Alaihi Wa Sallam made Dua for him for knowledge of Qur’an. Our Ulema consider him the best scholar of his time.
Tafseer Ibne Abbas says the following meaning of the word ‘Wasilah’: Seek with Allah high degrees through RIGHTEOUS works.
What do you mean by that?
Through the work that pleases Allah, which means, basically follow closely the instructions, recommendation, etc. So, we don’t get anything special from here about the word WASILAH.
So, What’s next?
I will check Tafseer Ibne Katheer.
Why do you choose that?
He usually links an ayah with the relevant other Ayat and Hadith.
So, what do you get from there?
He quotes another Ayah where Allah mentions about Wasilah. Also he mentions the understanding of the Sahaba. And he mentioned the Hadith that talks about how to get Wasilah.
Can you summarize those?
Wasilah means to them is how you approach, the way of approaching things. So they mentioned it is by obeying Allah’s commands.
Ath-Thawri said that Talhah said that Ata’ said that Ibn Abbas said that Wasilah means the means of approach’.
Muj ahid, Abu Wa’il, Al-Hasan, Qatadah, Abdullah bin Kathir, As-Suddi, Ibn Zayd and others gave the same meaning for Wasilah.
Qatadah said that the Ayah means, “Seek the means of approach to Him by obeying Him and performing the acts that please Him.”
But at the same time, the hadith says that Rasulullah Salla Allahu Alaihi Wa Sallam instructed the companion to ask ‘WASILAH for him, for it is a GRADE in the Jannah which Allah will only allow one of His slaves’
And what did He instructed to do?
Sending Salah and Salam after hearing Adhan and asking for WASILAH for Rasulullah.
It is basically the Dua that we make after Adhan.
And is there any other ways to seek Wasilah?
Well, we can understand, it is anything that pleasing to Allah. Like, Sadaqa, helping your Muslim brothers, helping people in need, helping any creatures in need, all sorts of Good Deeds which Allah loves and we can get closer to Allah by doing these.
Why do you limit your reading of Tafseer to Ibne Abbas and Ibne Katheer?
What about looking at any contemporary Tafseer?
Well, this is such an issue that doesn’t have anything to do with the change of time, era whatsoever, so we can clearly stick and limit our understanding with the understanding of the Salaf.
Then where the condition of ‘Baiyah’ to an Ulema comes from?
What about those groups who explain this word as for giving ‘Baiyah’ to a Sheikh/Awlia/’Peer’ to seek means to Allah?
I guess from their ‘Hawa’!
Does the Ayah put any condition to give Baiyah particularly to any Ulema in order to get close to Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala?
And we already got the understanding of the word ‘Wasilah’ from the Salaf, which doesn’t leave an iota of doubt that this has nothing to do with what these misguided groups took the meaning of the Ayah. You can understand their Baatil understanding of taking this Ayah to make it a criteria/condition, which is, as they say, ‘you have to be attached with an Ulema, be with the ‘Sohobat’ of a Ulema.
How clearly you can now understand the misguidance!
It’s just that simple!
And Allah knows best.
So, what do you understand from this?
We understand the Haqq from Baatil.
And the Critical Reasoning:
And that’s how through the critical reasoning you understand the Haqq and discard the Baatil, Bi-Iznillah!
You read and you think, analyse and only then, you read the Tafsir, the truth will be clear to you, In Shaa Allah! Take Allah as your absolute guide.
On the other hand, you get your understanding from those misguided Ulema because they say, ‘You cannot understand Quran, you have to understand it from Ulema’, you let them block your mind
And Allah Ta’ala knows best.
May Allah Ta Baraka Wa Ta’ala guide those misguided groups.
